When you register now there is a security code that you have to fill in. This has been added to try to cut down on the number of bogus users who sign up on the site. On the old site I'd often get 5-10 signups everyday that were just automated scripts, not real people. Hopefully the security code system (or captcha to give it its proper name) will alleviate this.
